BBC Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing is very much a staple on a Saturday evening for my husband and I when we are not out socialising.

Sadly of late there is much controversy around a couple of the professional dancers and this is tarnishing the clean cut image of the show.

I will not dwell on the accusations in question or use the names of those involved, what I will say is the world of dance is very tough, competitive and some may say fierce.

The format of Strictly means you have a professional who is fully trained in their craft and usually a celebrity with no dance experience whatsoever.

The professional is normally working with a blank canvas with two aims, one, to train the celebrity to dance and secondly to win the competition, always remember it is a competition.

There is a very strict timetable each week and this means each Monday a new dance needs to be learned and as the shows progresses two glances and in the course of that week before Saturday lighting and dress rehearsals are needed.

Ultimately at the start of each week the professional is aiming to teach the celebrity as quickly and as professionally as possible due to the time constraints.

During this time tempers may become frayed and on occasions the wrong message can be picked up by the celebrity thinking the professional is being aggressive, bullying or rude.

Ultimately the celebrity has entered the competition to learn how to dance and win the competition, taking that into account they may be over sensitive to criticism or taking the teaching in the wrong way.

It has been reported that junior production staff have now shared what they witnessed, surely it would have been more beneficial for all if it was raised at the time not once it appears in the media, there is something called damage limitation.

I’m sure there are lessons to be learnt on all sides and I hope the show this year can progress without this cloud hanging over what has been for years top entertainment.
